Omegon Pro APO 66/400 ED Apochromatic Refractor OTA
The Omegon Pro APO 66 mm ED is a compact apochromatic refractor that delivers outstanding color fidelity and contrast across a wide range of applications - from detailed wildlife and nature observation to lunar and planetary astronomy and wide-field astrophotography. If you are looking for a high-quality optical instrument that performs equally well in the field and under the night sky, this is a compelling choice at its price point.
Optics - True Apochromatic Performance
The optical heart of this telescope is a two-element ED apochromatic doublet that meets the most demanding requirements for color correction. Even at magnifications around 100x, there are no distracting color fringes or chromatic halos around bright objects. Stars appear as tight, well-defined points of light, and high-contrast targets such as the Moon, planets, and bright double stars are rendered with exceptional sharpness and natural color.
This level of color correction sets apochromatic refractors apart from standard achromats, where residual chromatic aberration becomes increasingly noticeable at higher magnifications. With the Omegon Pro APO 66, what you see through the eyepiece is a clean, neutral, high-contrast image - the kind of view that makes extended observing sessions genuinely enjoyable.
Applications
The versatility of this instrument is one of its strongest selling points. Unlike telescopes that are optimized for a single purpose, the Omegon Pro APO 66 performs well across several different disciplines.
For nature and wildlife observation, the combination of 66 mm aperture and 400 mm focal length at f/6.1 provides a bright, wide, and detailed view. Fine feather structures in birds, distant animals in open terrain, or landscapes at long range - all are rendered with a clarity and color accuracy that typical spotting scopes at this size cannot match. The compact dimensions and included aluminium carry case make it easy to take on any trip.
For astronomical observation, the telescope provides genuine capability despite its modest aperture. The Moon reveals a wealth of surface detail - craters, mountain ranges, rilles, and the subtle texture of the mare regions all become visible with good seeing. Jupiter shows its main equatorial belts and the Galilean moons, Saturn's ring system and Cassini Division are clearly resolved, and the polar ice caps of Mars are identifiable near opposition. The maximum useful magnification of 130x provides ample room for detailed planetary work.
Astrophotography
The Omegon Pro APO 66 is rated as very good for astrophotography. The short focal length of 400 mm and the fast f/6.1 focal ratio make it particularly well suited for wide-field imaging of extended deep-sky objects - emission nebulae, large open clusters, and nearby galaxies. With a suitable field flattener corrector, the image circle can be optimized for modern APS-C and even full-frame sensors. The 2″ Crayford focuser with 360° rotation allows precise camera positioning and convenient framing adjustment without moving the whole telescope.
Focuser and Mechanics
The telescope is fitted with a 360° rotatable Crayford focuser with a 1:10 fine-focus reduction drive. The dual-speed mechanism allows rough focus adjustment followed by micro-precise fine tuning - essential for astrophotography with a camera, where the depth of focus is extremely shallow and coarse adjustments easily overshoot the focal point. The focuser accepts both 2″ and 1.25″ eyepieces and accessories via the included adapter.
The tube is a solid construction finished to the standard of the Omegon Pro series, and the complete instrument weighs 2.19 kg - light enough to be used on a compact photo tripod for terrestrial observation while still being rigid enough for astronomical use on a suitable equatorial or alt-azimuth mount.
What Is Included
The Omegon Pro APO 66 is supplied as an OTA - optical tube assembly without a mount. In the box you will find the telescope itself, a 2″ to 1.25″ eyepiece adapter, and a solid aluminium transport and storage case that protects the instrument during travel and storage. A mount and eyepieces are purchased separately according to your intended use.
