Sky-Watcher Plossl SWA 5mm 58° 1.25″ Eyepiece
The Sky-Watcher Plossl SWA 5mm planetary eyepiece is designed specifically for observing planets and the Moon at high magnification. This short focal length provides the powerful magnification needed for studying fine details in the atmospheres of Jupiter and Saturn, craters on the Moon, or polar caps on Mars.
Excellent Optical Quality
All optical elements of the eyepiece feature fully multi-coated anti-reflection layers (FMC - Fully Multi-Coated), which maximize light transmission and eliminate internal reflections. The result is an image with excellent contrast and sharpness that reveals even the finest planetary details.
The optical design minimizes distortion and provides high contrast essential for observing low-contrast features such as cloud bands on gas giants or delicate structures on the lunar surface. The 58° field of view offers a pleasant compromise between magnification and width of visible area.
Comfort for Eyeglass Wearers
The eyepiece offers 16mm eye relief, which allows comfortable observation even for people wearing glasses. You can keep your glasses on and still see the entire field of view without vignetting.
Rubber fold-down eyecups can be folded down or completely unscrewed to accommodate individual needs. Observers without glasses can leave the eyecups extended for optimal eye position, while eyeglass wearers can fold them down or remove them to bring eyeglass lenses closer to the eyepiece lens.
Thoughtful Design
The outer body of the eyepiece features a tactile rubber coating that ensures a firm grip even when using gloves during cold nights. The rubber surface also protects the eyepiece from minor impacts and provides a pleasant feel during handling.
The eyepiece barrel has a standard diameter of 1.25″ (31.75mm) with M28.5×0.6 threading for attaching standard astronomical filters. You can thus use colored planetary filters or moon filters to increase contrast and reduce brightness without needing to change eyepieces.
Ideal Use
Thanks to the short focal length of 5mm, this eyepiece is intended primarily for planetary observation at high magnification. In a telescope with 1000mm focal length, it will provide 200× magnification, which is ideal for detailed study of planets. For achieving even higher magnification, the eyepiece can be combined with a Barlow lens.
The eyepiece is also suitable for observing double stars with close angular separation or for studying details of the lunar surface in areas rich with interesting features.
