Sky-Watcher Virtuoso GTi MAK 127/1500 WiFi Dobson GoTo Telescope
The Sky-Watcher Virtuoso GTi MAK 127/1500 is a compact Maksutov-Cassegrain telescope paired with a motorised GoTo alt-azimuth mount featuring built-in WiFi. It combines genuine optical performance with the convenience of smartphone-controlled GoTo alignment in a package that fits in a backpack and sets up in minutes. Whether you are taking your first steps in astronomy or looking for a capable grab-and-go instrument for quick sessions from the garden or under a dark sky while camping, the Virtuoso GTi delivers.
Virtuoso GTi mount - GoTo and WiFi control
The Virtuoso GTi mount automatically slews to any selected object and keeps it centred in the field of view as the Earth rotates. Unlike many entry-level GoTo systems that require a hand controller, the Virtuoso GTi has its own built-in wireless network. Simply connect your smartphone or tablet to the mount's WiFi hotspot and control everything through the free SynScan app, available for both iOS and Android. No internet connection is required - the app works entirely offline, giving you access to a database of thousands of objects wherever you observe.
The mount can be powered either by eight AA batteries (1.5 V) for portable use in the field, or via a 12 V DC mains adapter at home. Manual fine adjustment is possible at any time alongside the motorised GoTo operation.
MAK 127/1500 optical system
The 127 mm Maksutov-Cassegrain optical tube is an excellent choice for observers who want a compact instrument capable of serious lunar and planetary work. The Maksutov design uses a spherical meniscus corrector lens combined with a primary and secondary mirror to fold the optical path into a very short tube - the result is a 1500 mm focal length in a body measuring just a fraction of that. This folded design also makes the instrument robust and mechanically stable, with no fragile protruding parts.
Optically, the Maksutov-Cassegrain is known for minimal aberrations. Coma is well controlled across the field, and chromatic aberration - the false colour that plagues simple refractors - is virtually absent. The image is sharp, high-contrast and neutral in colour. It is fair to say that this telescope extracts close to 100% of the detail that 127 mm of aperture can theoretically resolve.
The 127 mm aperture collects approximately 239 times more light than the unaided eye, allowing objects as faint as magnitude 12.1 to be observed. The angular resolution of the instrument is sufficient to split double stars separated by as little as 1.1 arcseconds.
What can you observe?
The long focal length and high focal ratio of f/11.8 make the Virtuoso GTi MAK 127 particularly well suited for high-magnification observing of objects in the solar system. The Moon reveals an extraordinary wealth of craters, mountain ranges, rilles and volcanic features at the magnifications this telescope delivers. Planetary views are equally rewarding - Jupiter's equatorial belts and the Great Red Spot, Saturn's rings and the Cassini Division, the polar caps of Mars and the phases of Venus are all accessible targets.
The telescope performs well under city skies where light pollution limits the visibility of faint deep-sky nebulae - its strengths lie in high-contrast objects rather than in very extended, low surface brightness targets. For deep-sky observing from darker sites, an additional wide-field eyepiece with a focal length of 30-35 mm is recommended to lower the magnification and widen the field of view.
Focuser and eyepieces
The telescope uses a 1.25-inch focuser output. Focusing is achieved by turning a knob that adjusts the position of the primary mirror - a smooth and precise mechanism that holds focus without drift. Two 1.25-inch eyepieces are included in the package, allowing you to begin observing immediately. A star diagonal is also included for comfortable viewing at the zenith and at high elevations.
Portability
Despite housing a 127 mm aperture and a 1500 mm focal length optical system, the Virtuoso GTi is compact and light enough to carry in a bag and set up on a table or low surface without a tripod. This makes it one of the most capable grab-and-go telescopes available at its size and price level. It is equally at home on a balcony, a garden table, a campsite or a dark-sky observing field.
