Sky-Watcher 45° 1.25″ Amici Erecting Prism for Natural Comfortable Viewing
When choosing a star diagonal or accessory for terrestrial observation, the question of viewing angle rarely receives the attention it deserves. The standard choice is 90°, but a strict right angle is not always the most comfortable option for every situation. The Sky-Watcher 45° Amici prism offers a different ergonomic approach - one that many observers, particularly when watching objects at lower elevations, will find more natural and less physically demanding than a full right angle.
Does the Difference Between 45° and 90° Actually Matter?
At first glance this might seem like an insignificant detail. In practice, however, the deflection angle of the eyepiece significantly affects how comfortably and how long you can observe before neck and back fatigue sets in. A 90° prism is the ideal choice when observing objects high above the horizon - for example in astronomical use or watching birds flying overhead. The moment you focus on objects near the horizon - distant mountain ridges, ships at sea, subjects in the landscape or anything else at or slightly above eye level - the 90° prism forces you to tilt your head backwards even when the telescope is pointing almost horizontally.
The 45° prism solves this problem elegantly. When observing objects at lower elevations, your head remains in a natural, relaxed position. The neck is not strained, the shoulders stay loose and the overall posture during observation is more ergonomic. The practical result is that you can observe for longer and with greater concentration, without the physical discomfort that cuts shorter sessions.
Amici Prism - A Correctly Oriented Image
Like the 90° version, this prism uses a special roof-shaped optical surface (Dachkant) that delivers a correctly oriented image both laterally and vertically. This is the fundamental difference from standard star diagonals and mirrors, which redirect the light at a convenient angle but leave the image mirror-reversed.
When observing through a telescope without a correctly orienting element, the viewer must constantly translate what they see mentally - what appears on the left is actually on the right, and the movement of an object in the eyepiece is opposite to its real direction. The Amici prism eliminates this mental effort entirely. The image in the eyepiece corresponds precisely to what the naked eye would see - intuitive and completely free of disorientation. This advantage becomes immediately apparent the moment you try to track a moving subject or quickly redirect the telescope from one object to another.
Ideal Uses for the 45° Prism
The 45° prism is particularly popular in two scenarios. The first is group observing sessions where multiple people of different heights take turns at the eyepiece - body posture with a 45° prism is more naturally comfortable for most observers and less dependent on the exact height of the tripod than with the 90° version. The second scenario is extended, focused observation of a single subject - a bird at its nest, a distant building, a mountain pass or shipping traffic - where the ergonomic head position determines whether you can stay comfortably at the eyepiece for ten minutes or half an hour.
The prism is also an excellent choice for hikers and naturalists who use a telescope from an observation platform or cliff edge, where the view is angled downward or across rather than directly at or above the horizon.
Compatibility and Construction
The Sky-Watcher 45° Amici prism is designed for refractors and catadioptric systems (Schmidt-Cassegrain, Maksutov). As with the 90° version, it is not suitable for Newtonian reflectors, where the addition of another reflecting element would produce incorrect image orientation.
Both input and output use the standard 1.25″ (31.75 mm) diameter, so the prism connects directly to any telescope with a 1.25″ focuser without adapters and accepts any standard 1.25″ eyepiece. The optical surfaces of the prism carry multi-layer anti-reflection coatings for minimal light loss and maximum transmission of brightness and contrast. The precision-machined metal body with threaded connection ensures firm, secure eyepiece retention without play, even after repeated accessory changes in the field.
