Sky-Watcher 102/500 AZ Pronto Astronomical Telescope
The Sky-Watcher AZ Pronto 102/500 is an achromatic refractor that impresses with its combination of large aperture, compact dimensions, and lightweight alt-azimuth mount. The result is a telescope that is equally at home under the night sky and in the boot of a car on the way to a day trip in nature. Straightforward operation, quick assembly, and a genuinely wide field of view make it an ideal companion for anyone who wants to observe the sky and the natural world without complicated setup procedures or technical difficulties.
Wide-Field Optics
The 102 mm objective diameter and 500 mm focal length define the character of this telescope. The f/4.9 focal ratio places the 102/500 AZ Pronto among fast refractors - this means a wide field of view and a bright image at low magnifications, with the telescope gathering approximately 212 times more light than the human eye. Faint objects down to approximately magnitude 12.6 are accessible even from suburban locations with moderate light pollution.
The optical resolution of the telescope allows stars separated by more than 1.4″ to be resolved - sufficient for splitting many beautiful double stars and for detailed views of the lunar surface. The optics carry multi-layer anti-reflection coatings for maximum light transmission and good image contrast.
Achromatic Objective and Chromatic Aberration
The AZ Pronto is a classic two-element achromatic refractor. This type of objective delivers good results particularly at medium and lower magnifications, where it produces a bright and contrasty image. At high magnifications or on very bright objects such as the limb of the Moon or bright planets, a faint purple or blue fringe around high-contrast edges may be visible - a natural characteristic of achromatic optics. For wide-field observation, extended deep-sky objects, and use as a daytime spotting scope, this characteristic does not in any way limit the instrument's performance.
What You Will See through the Sky-Watcher 102/500 AZ Pronto
The wide field of view at low magnification is this telescope's greatest strength and makes it particularly outstanding for certain types of observation.
Open star clusters are a spectacular sight in the AZ Pronto. The Pleiades, the Hyades, the Double Cluster in Perseus, Praesepe, or the Wild Duck Cluster M11 - all these extended objects fit entirely or largely within the field of view, with stars sparkling against the dark background in all their beauty. The Milky Way becomes an extraordinary panorama of star fields, nebular clouds, and dark dust lanes in the AZ Pronto.
For comet observation, this telescope is exceptionally well suited - the large aperture reveals even fainter comets and the wide field of view allows extended tails and comas to be observed without the need to change eyepieces. Variable stars can be systematically monitored using the visual comparison method with surrounding reference stars.
On the Moon, craters, mountain ranges, and dark maria are clearly visible, with craters several tens of kilometres in diameter appearing detailed and three-dimensional especially near the terminator. On Jupiter, both main equatorial cloud belts and the Galilean moons are visible. Saturn shows its ring system and under good seeing the Cassini Division. Mars near opposition reveals the polar ice cap.
For more detailed planetary observation where high magnification and maximum contrast of fine atmospheric detail are required, telescopes of the Maksutov type or refractors with longer focal lengths are better suited - the AZ Pronto is by nature more of a wide-field overview instrument than a planetary specialist.
AZ Pronto Alt-Azimuth Mount - Simple to Use for Everyone
The AZ Pronto mount is exactly what the name suggests: a lightweight, aluminium alt-azimuth mount designed for comfortable and quick use without any prior astronomical knowledge. There is no need to align to north, set the latitude, or deal with a polar axis. Simply mount the telescope, aim it using the finder or by sighting along the tube, and start observing.
The mount is equipped with slow-motion controls on both axes - vertical and horizontal. Two flexible control handles allow smooth and precise movements, one for each direction. The handles can be set in two different positions on each axis, so you can easily adjust the comfortable working position to match the tripod height and your own preference. The mount can also be moved freely by hand around both axes for quick repositioning when switching to a different object.
Tripod and Portability
The aluminium tripod with adjustable leg height allows the telescope to be set at a comfortable viewing height whether seated or standing. The legs lock securely at any position, making setup quick and stable even on uneven ground. The overall weight of the assembly is low - the telescope, mount, and tripod fit into one reasonably sized bag and the complete setup can be carried by one person without difficulty.
This portability is one of the key strengths of the Sky-Watcher AZ Pronto. The telescope fits easily into the boot of most cars, and setting it up at the observing location takes only a few minutes. For observers who do not want to leave the telescope at home just because an outing was spontaneous or the destination unplanned, this is an exceptionally practical characteristic.
Nature Observation with the 102/500 AZ Pronto
Thanks to the 45° erecting prism included in the box, the Sky-Watcher 102/500 AZ Pronto can easily be transformed into a powerful spotting scope for daytime use. The prism produces an upright and laterally correct image, making observation of birds, wildlife, boats on the water, or distant landscapes natural and comfortable - the image corresponds to what you see with the naked eye, just significantly closer and more detailed.
The 102 mm objective diameter and quality coated optics deliver a bright and contrasty image even under reduced light conditions - at dusk, in woodland, or on an overcast day when smaller spotting scopes begin to struggle with insufficient light. In this respect the AZ Pronto noticeably outperforms typical spotting scopes of comparable size.
Focuser and Accessories
The telescope is fitted with a 2″ rack and pinion focuser compatible with Sky-Watcher electronic focusers. The box includes a 2″ to 1.25″ reducer with a 45° erecting prism in the 1.25″ standard - compatible with all common 1.25″ eyepieces. For use with 2″ eyepieces, a 2″ diagonal mirror is required separately; a dielectric diagonal is recommended for the best image quality.
The box also includes a Star Pointer red dot finder, which makes it easy to locate objects quickly without having to navigate an inverted or mirror-reversed image as with a conventional optical finder. Tube rings with a dovetail bar allow the telescope to be transferred to a standard astronomical mount if required.
