Omegon erecting Barlow lens 1.5x for 1.25″ eyepieces
If you use a refractor for birdwatching, landscape observation, or viewing astronomical objects near the horizon, you have probably experienced the inconvenience of an inverted or mirror-reversed image. Omegon designed this 1.5x erecting Barlow lens for 1.25″ eyepieces to solve exactly that problem. With a single accessory you gain two benefits at once: a correct, natural image orientation and a 1.5x increase in the effective focal length of your telescope.
How it works
A standard astronomical refractor produces an image that is rotated 180 degrees - fully inverted. For purely astronomical observing this is usually not an issue, but as soon as you want to use the telescope for nature watching or navigate with a star map, a correctly oriented image becomes essential.
The erecting Barlow lens incorporates a special optical element that flips the image back to its natural upright position - exactly as you would see it with the naked eye. At the same time it acts as a conventional Barlow lens, extending the effective focal length by 1.5x and proportionally increasing the magnification of any eyepiece you use, without the need to swap to a shorter focal length eyepiece.
Setup and compatibility
The accessory slides directly into a standard 1.25″ (31.75 mm) focuser drawtube of any refractor, and your chosen eyepiece is then inserted into it. No complex calibration or tools are required - the whole process takes just a few seconds. It is compatible with refractors of all common types and manufacturers that use a standard 1.25″ focuser diameter.
Who is it for?
- Beginner astronomers who want easier orientation when observing the Moon alongside a star map
- Nature observers using a refractor as a spotting scope - enjoy a natural, upright view of birds, wildlife, or distant landscapes
- Anyone looking for an alternative to a star diagonal who also wants a moderate magnification boost without changing eyepieces
Why 1.5x and not 2x?
The 1.5x magnification factor is a deliberately practical choice. Unlike a 2x Barlow, it does not extend the effective exit pupil path as dramatically, which means the image retains better brightness even under poor lighting conditions. This makes it particularly useful for twilight nature observation as well as low-contrast astronomical targets near the horizon.
