Vixen Nature Eye 50/360 AZ - children's telescope for astronomy and nature watching
The Vixen Nature Eye 50/360 AZ is an ideal first telescope for children taking their initial steps in astronomy, as well as for daytime nature observation. Japanese manufacturer Vixen is one of the most respected names in astronomical optics worldwide, and the Nature Eye model was designed specifically to be accessible even to the youngest observers - from age 6 onwards. Its compact aluminum body, bright orange color, and easy operation make it an excellent gift for curious children and families alike.
Optical performance
This achromatic refractor features a 50 mm objective lens diameter and a 360 mm focal length, delivering sufficient light-gathering power for observing the Moon, bright planets, and daytime scenery. The focal ratio of f/7.2 ensures a bright and clear image even at dusk. The maximum recommended magnification of 72x allows young observers to distinguish craters on the lunar surface, spot the rings of Saturn, and see the four largest moons of Jupiter - the so-called Galilean moons: Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto.

Build quality and portability
Both the telescope tube and the tripod are made from aluminum, keeping the entire setup lightweight while remaining durable enough for regular outdoor use. The total weight including all accessories is just 1260 g, making it easy to carry to a garden, meadow, or any outdoor location. The tripod folds down quickly and offers adjustable height, so it is comfortable for both children and adults.
Convenience features
Built into the focuser draw tube is a rotating zenith mirror (diagonal), which allows comfortable viewing at various angles without requiring awkward neck positions. The eyepiece holder uses the standard 1.25″ (31.7 mm) format, meaning additional eyepieces and accessories can be purchased separately in the future to expand the capabilities of the instrument. The package also includes a 5x20 mm optical finder scope for easy target acquisition in the sky or in nature. A built-in compass helps with orientation in the field.
What can you observe?
The Vixen Nature Eye is a versatile instrument that appeals not only to future astronomers but also to nature enthusiasts. During the day it can be used to watch birds at the edge of a forest, wildlife in a field, or ships on the horizon. After dark it becomes a window to the universe:
- Lunar craters are clearly visible even at moderate magnifications
- Saturn's rings become distinct at the maximum recommended magnification
- Jupiter's four Galilean moons appear as a clear line of bright dots on either side of the planet
- Open star clusters and bright nebulae are within reach on clear nights
This makes the telescope suitable for year-round use across a wide variety of conditions and lighting situations.
Simple altazimuth mount - perfect for beginners
The altazimuth (Alt-Az) mount is the most natural choice for beginners of all ages. Movement is intuitive - up and down for altitude, left and right for azimuth, just like pointing with your hand. There is no need to think about polar alignment or tracking drives. Simply aim and observe. This straightforward approach is exactly what children appreciate: no unnecessary complications, just the pure joy of discovery.
Why choose the Vixen Nature Eye over cheaper alternatives?
Unlike inexpensive plastic telescopes that often end up in a drawer after a few uses, the Vixen Nature Eye 50/360 AZ offers an aluminum body and the standardized 1.25″ eyepiece format, ensuring long-term usability and the ability to upgrade with compatible accessories as the observer's skills grow. Vixen's heritage in precision optical manufacturing means the optics will not disappoint even a more experienced observer. Parents looking for a meaningful, educational, and durable gift - whether for a birthday or as a holiday present - will find this telescope strikes the right balance between simplicity, quality, and value.

Notes on magnification and eyepieces
The two supplied eyepieces cover a useful range from wide-field views at lower magnification to detailed lunar observation at higher power. Magnification is calculated by dividing the focal length of the telescope (360 mm) by the focal length of the eyepiece used. Because the focuser accepts all standard 1.25″ eyepieces, the range of available accessories is very wide, and upgrading is straightforward as the observer progresses.
