ZWO ADC 1.25″ atmospheric dispersion corrector

If you have ever observed Jupiter or Saturn and wondered why the planets show strange colored fringes - red on one side and blue on the other - then you know exactly why the ZWO ADC was developed. The ZWO ADC atmospheric dispersion corrector is an elegant optomechanical solution that eliminates chromatic distortion caused by the Earth's atmosphere, allowing you to observe and photograph planets with dramatically improved sharpness and color accuracy.

Why does atmospheric dispersion matter?

When light from a planet or star passes through the Earth's atmosphere, it is refracted - and different wavelengths are bent at different angles. The atmosphere acts like a prism: it spreads the light and causes the individual color components of the image to shift slightly relative to one another. The result is chromatic aberration that appears as colored fringing around bright objects. The closer the object is to the horizon, the stronger this effect becomes.

This is particularly problematic in central and northern Europe, where planets such as Jupiter, Saturn or Mars never rise very high above the horizon - and that is precisely when atmospheric dispersion is at its worst. Without correction, you lose resolution that no amount of post-processing can fully recover.

How does the ZWO ADC work?

The principle of the corrector is physically elegant. The ADC contains two high-quality optical prisms with full multi-coating (FMC), positioned facing each other and rotatable via two adjustment levers. By turning the levers in opposite directions, you change the relative orientation of the prisms, controlling the degree of compensation:

  • Levers parallel - zero correction effect
  • Levers 180 degrees apart - maximum correction

This causes the separated chromatic components of light to recombine by superposition into a sharp, color-accurate image. Because different wavelengths are affected differently by the atmosphere, the fine adjustment of the levers allows you to precisely compensate for current observing conditions.

Correct alignment is important

The corrector must be properly aligned with respect to the horizon - when looking through the eyepiece, the levers should be oriented parallel to the horizon. When using a parallactic mount, keep in mind that the direction of the horizon changes during the course of an observation session.

Benefits for planetary photography

Without an ADC, color fringing and image distortion appear during planetary imaging - and they cannot be fully removed even with careful post-processing, because the lost resolution is gone permanently. With monochrome imaging (LRGB), combining individual color channels does partially compensate for the shifts, but the luminance frame - the key to maximum resolution - suffers the same problems as a full-color frame.

With the ZWO ADC, all of these issues are eliminated at the capture stage. The resulting image is dramatically more detailed and post-processing delivers much better results.

For visual observers and astrophotographers alike

The ZWO ADC is a fully capable tool for both visual observers and astrophotographers. The correction effect is immediately visible when looking through the eyepiece - planets appear sharper, free of colored fringes, with better contrast of surface detail. Integration is easy thanks to the T2 thread on both sides, and 1.25″ adapters are included in the package. The ADC fits seamlessly into standard telescope setups.
