GSO Plössl 6mm 50° 1.25″ eyepiece
Looking for an eyepiece that lets you get the most out of your telescope when observing the Moon, planets or double stars? The GSO Plössl eyepiece with a 6mm focal length is exactly what you need. It is a proven Plössl design that has earned a firm place in the kit of amateur and advanced astronomers around the world over decades of use - and for good reason.
Classic Plössl design with reliable optical correction
The classic four-element Plössl construction (two symmetrical achromatic doublets) ensures good correction of chromatic aberration and a relatively flat field of view at a reasonable price. The Plössl 6mm eyepiece with a 50° apparent field of view provides enough space to comfortably observe surface details on the Moon or the atmospheric bands of Jupiter. At shorter focal lengths such as 6mm, a 50° field of view is the standard for this type of construction - truly wide apparent fields would require more complex designs, but at a significantly higher cost.
Fully coated optics and comfortable eye relief
The brightness and viewing comfort of the eyepiece are supported by FC (fully coated) anti-reflection coatings on all air-to-glass surfaces. This treatment reduces unwanted light reflections, increases image contrast and minimises stray light that could otherwise degrade the perception of fine details on planetary discs. A rubber eyecup contributes to comfortable eye placement and also shields against ambient light when observing in the field.
Ideal for high magnification planetary observation
The short 6mm focal length makes this eyepiece well suited for use at high magnifications. If you have, for example, a refractor with a 900mm focal length or a Newtonian reflector with a 1200mm focal length, you will achieve magnifications of 150x and 200x respectively - values ideal for detailed observation of the lunar surface, Saturn with its rings or Jupiter's moons. We recommend using it under good atmospheric conditions (good seeing), when the air above is not too turbulent - only then does the full potential of high magnification reveal itself. The 1.25″ barrel diameter is the most widely used standard, so the eyepiece fits the vast majority of telescopes on the market.
Note on eye relief for eyeglass wearers
One of the few drawbacks of short Plössl eyepieces in general is the limited eye relief (the distance from the last optical element to the exit pupil), which in the case of the 6mm Plössl is around 5-6mm. Users who wear glasses may therefore find comfort slightly reduced; however, the rubber eyecup allows easy adjustment of eye position.
