Red light doesn't trigger the same pupil constriction as white light, allowing your eyes to maintain their dark adaptation - critical for observing faint deep-sky objects. The smooth dimming control lets you adjust brightness precisely for different tasks: brighter for reading star charts or adjusting equipment, dimmer for simply moving around your observing site. Powered by a 9V battery (included), this compact flashlight is an indispensable accessory for any astronomer's...

Binorum DarkSky 1.25 Light Pollution Filter Binorum DarkSky 1.25″ Light Pollution Filter Reveal the Universe Under Light-Polluted Skies Astronomical observations demand dark skies free from light pollution - only then can the secrets of the universe reveal themselves to the observer. The revolutionary Binorum DarkSky 1.25″ filter provides exactly that kind of sky - it reduces the interference from street lighting and minimizes background sky glow, allowing details of observed objects to emerge with remarkable clarity. Enhanced Contrast for Deep-Sky and Planetary Observations Thanks to the filter's selective transmission, contrast of low-contrast objects is significantly increased. You can now see much more structure on Jupiter and...

Omegon Super Plössl 40mm 45° 1.25″ eyepiece

Looking for an eyepiece that delivers a sharp, high-contrast image without the need to invest in premium optics? Then the Omegon Super Plössl is exactly what you need. This eyepiece builds on the time-tested Plössl design, beloved by generations of amateur astronomers around the world. It is a classic that simply works - and at a price that will pleasantly surprise you.

Optical design and field of view

The Omegon Super Plössl eyepiece is based on the traditional four-element Plössl layout, further optimized to achieve a wider apparent field of view. The standard Super Plössl offers a 52° apparent field of view; in the 40mm variant, this field is 45° for optical reasons. Even so, the view is noticeably more comfortable than with older Kellner eyepieces or basic Plössl designs. Observing feels like looking through a large window - you see more of the surroundings of the target object and can keep it centered more easily, especially with telescopes that have no motor drive.

Coatings and contrast

The lenses feature multi-layer anti-reflection coatings that minimize unwanted reflections and allow the maximum amount of light to reach your eye. The lens edges are blackened - a detail often omitted on cheaper eyepieces, but one that has a fundamental impact on image contrast. As a result, light does not scatter through unwanted internal reflections inside the eyepiece barrel, but arrives exactly where it should. The outcome is noticeably better contrast when observing both faint deep-sky objects - such as the spiral structure of galaxy M51 - and bright targets like the Moon or planets.

Comfort and compatibility

The eyepiece is equipped with rubber fold-down eyecups that shield against stray light from the surroundings while also providing a comfortable eye relief distance. The standard 1.25″ barrel ensures compatibility with virtually any telescope on the market - refractors, reflectors and catadioptric systems alike.

Intended use - overview and low-power observations

The 40mm focal length makes this eyepiece ideal for low-magnification overview observations with a large true field of view. It is perfect for:

  • Locating objects across a wide area of sky
  • Observing open star clusters
  • Wide-field views of large nebulae
  • General sweeping and orientation sessions

The Super Plössl series

The Omegon Super Plössl series includes a total of 9 different focal lengths ranging from 4mm to 40mm. All eyepieces in the series are parfocal, meaning that when you swap eyepieces the image remains in focus - you do not need to refocus, which is a genuinely valuable advantage during observations at a dark site.

Who is this eyepiece for?

The Omegon Super Plössl 40mm is an excellent choice for both beginning and more experienced amateur astronomers who want to replace the basic eyepiece supplied with their telescope with something of higher quality, without spending a great deal of money. It is also a superb addition to an existing eyepiece set as an overview piece for low magnifications. If you are building a starter eyepiece kit for visual astronomy, the Super Plössl 40mm should definitely be part of it.
