Celestron Variable Grey filter 1.25″

If you have ever been blinded by an overly bright Moon during an observation session, or found yourself looking for a way to bring out fine surface details on planets, then the Celestron Variable Grey 1.25″ adjustable polarizing filter is exactly what you need. It is an elegant yet technically refined solution for observers who want full control over image brightness - without having to own an entire set of fixed-transmission filters.

How it works

The set consists of two polarizing filters in a standard 1.25″ thread, mounted so they can rotate relative to each other. The principle is simple and physically clean - by rotating one filter against the other, you change the angle between the polarizing planes and thereby smoothly regulate the amount of light reaching the eyepiece. The result is seamless, continuous brightness adjustment with no jumps or color artifacts. This approach is considerably more flexible than fixed neutral density filters with a set transmittance value.

Main applications

Lunar observation

The most common use is, naturally, observing the Moon, where the intensity of light - especially at full Moon - can be genuinely uncomfortable at higher magnifications and reduces both contrast and the perceived sharpness of detail. The variable filter fully replaces a classic Moon filter and adds the ability to fine-tune brightness according to current conditions, the lunar phase, and the eyepiece in use.

Planetary observation

When observing planets - Jupiter, Saturn or Mars - the correct setting of the polarizing pair helps increase contrast and reveal fine structures in atmospheric bands or on the surface that would otherwise blend into the background. The filter works reliably with all telescope types, including Newtonian reflectors, where the presence of a filter in the optical path is not an issue.

Why choose a variable filter

  • Smooth, stepless brightness control - no abrupt transitions
  • Replaces a whole set of fixed-density filters
  • No color shifts or optical artifacts
  • Standard 1.25″ thread - fits virtually any eyepiece
  • Compatible with all telescope types, including Newtonians
  • Compact size and simple operation

A practical addition to any observation kit

The variable polarizing filter for 1.25″ eyepieces is a practical and durable accessory that pays off for any observer who wants to focus on detail rather than fighting an overexposed image. Its compact dimensions, standard thread and ease of use make it a permanent fixture in any observation setup.
