Sky-Watcher Evolux 82/530 ED apochromatic refractor - OTA

The Sky-Watcher Evolux 82ED is the successor to the popular Evostar 80ED model. It is a compact, highly portable apochromatic refractor designed primarily for wide-field astrophotography and deep-sky visual observation. Compared to the previous Evostar and Esprit series, an entirely new low-dispersion ED glass has been used, which required a complete redesign of the optical system - not just a replacement of the lenses. The result is a two-element apochromatic objective with an aperture of 82mm, a focal length of 530mm, and a focal ratio of f/6.4, with full FMC (fully multi-coated) anti-reflection coatings.

Optical design

The air-spaced doublet design provides better thermal stability and more effective elimination of chromatic aberration compared to cemented constructions. Thanks to the combination of the new ED glass and the redesigned optical geometry, the Evolux 82ED achieves excellent correction of both chromatic and spherical aberration. This results in high contrast and sharp star points even when used with modern full-frame or APS-C sensors.

Tube and mechanical construction

The tube is made of aluminium and measures 425mm when retracted, or 580mm with the dew shield extended. The integrated retractable dew shield protects the objective from dew and stray light, while also allowing compact storage. The clamshell mounting ring features two mounting points with a standard Vixen dovetail, allowing simultaneous attachment of a finder scope and an autoguider camera without additional adapters. The telescope is supplied in a sturdy aluminium carry case for safe transport to observation sites or on expeditions.

Focuser

The focuser has a bore of 61mm (2.4″) and is equipped with a fine-focusing mechanism - a microfocuser - with a standard 2″ output. This solution is especially appreciated when focusing with heavier astro cameras or when using binocular viewers. The tube does not include an optical finder scope, but the clamshell ring allows one to be easily added.

Optional 0.90x reducer and field flattener

A dedicated 0.90x reducer and field flattener is available as optional accessory. When attached, the focal length is reduced to 480mm and the focal ratio increases to f/5.8. The flattener ensures point-like stars all the way to the corners of the field of view, even with large sensors, significantly reducing the required exposure times and improving the overall efficiency of an astrophotography session. The reducer was designed specifically for the Evolux 82ED optics and is not interchangeable with reducers from the older Evostar series.

Who is this telescope for?

The Evolux 82ED is designed as a versatile instrument for astrophotographers and visual observers who demand high optical performance in a compact and portable body. The combination of a high-quality ED objective, robust mechanics, and a small footprint makes it one of the best choices in its price category for travel and field astronomy.
