Anyone who has ever observed terrestrial objects through an astronomical telescope knows how confusing a flipped or mirror-reversed image can be. Standard diagonal mirrors and prisms offer a comfortable 90° viewing angle, but they leave the image mirror-reversed - which is acceptable in astronomy, but highly inconvenient when watching birds, landscapes, or distant objects. This is exactly why the TS Optics 1.25″ Amici prism was developed - it solves this problem in an elegant and optically precise way.

Erect and correctly oriented image

The Amici prism - also known as a roof prism - uses a special geometry of reflecting surfaces that combines a comfortable 90° viewing angle with full image correction, restoring the natural orientation you would see with the naked eye. Unlike a standard diagonal mirror or Porro prism, which either mirror the image or only partially correct it, the Amici prism delivers an image correctly oriented both horizontally and vertically. The result is a natural, intuitive view - just like looking through a pair of binoculars.

How it works

The operating principle is based on a roof edge (known as the Dachkante), which performs an additional reflection to compensate for the image inversion introduced by the telescope's optical path. The quality of this element directly affects the sharpness of the final image - a precisely ground roof edge free of diffraction artifacts is critical in Amici prisms, and TS Optics pays close attention to careful manufacturing in this regard.
