Baader Planetarium Hyperion 5mm 68° 2″-1.25″ Eyepiece
The Baader Hyperion eyepiece range is far more than an ordinary eyepiece - it is a versatile optical system designed to unlock the full potential of any telescope. An eight-element optical design arranged in five groups delivers an exceptionally wide apparent field of view of 68°, giving you a comfortable, panoramic view of the night sky. The eye relief is 20mm across all focal lengths, so observers who wear glasses can use it with ease. FMC anti-reflection coating produces a clean, bright image with high contrast and minimal reflections. Excellent internal baffling further suppresses stray light and keeps the image sharp.
Two eyepieces in one
The Baader Hyperion 5mm eyepiece has a unique feature: it works as two separate optical systems. Unscrew the negative element and the six-element system becomes a full-size 2″ Erfle eyepiece with a noticeably longer focal length - ideal for observing large objects such as nebulae or star clusters. This design gives you remarkable flexibility. For the price of one eyepiece, you get two instruments with different characteristics. Switching between modes is simple and quick, with no extra accessories required.
Projection and afocal photography
Hyperion eyepieces are designed for afocal projection photography. Each eyepiece has two threads on the exit side: M43 (system thread 1) and SP54 (system thread 2). The M43 thread connects cameras with a T2 system via an M43/T2 adapter ring for standard eyepiece projection. The SP54 thread connects digital cameras and camcorders where the lens cannot be removed - for afocal photography. Both threads are protected by rubber caps when not in use, preventing damage and keeping dust out.
Fine Tuning Rings - extend your focal length without a Barlow lens
The Fine Tuning Ring (FTR) system lets you change the focal length of the eyepiece without adding a Barlow lens - and without introducing extra optical elements into the light path. The available extension rings of 14mm and 28mm transform the 5mm focal length to approximately 2.6mm while maintaining full sharpness and image quality. This is particularly valuable for planetary observation, where high magnification without any compromise in image quality is essential. Standard 1.25″ astronomical filters with a 1.25″ thread can also be screwed directly into the 1.25″ barrel - for observing the Moon, planets or emission nebulae.
Universal compatibility
Hyperion eyepieces work with both 2″ and 1.25″ focusers thanks to the included adapter. This makes them suitable for virtually every telescope on the market. The eyepiece performs equally well for visual observation and demanding astrophotography.
The Hyperion range covers focal lengths of 5mm, 8mm, 10mm, 13mm, 17mm, 21mm and 24mm, plus two aspheric eyepieces at 31mm and 36mm, and a zoom eyepiece with a continuously variable focal length from 8 to 24mm.
Why upgrade your eyepiece?
Most telescopes come with basic eyepieces that cannot make full use of the instrument's optical quality. Weak contrast, limited sharpness and a narrow field of view quickly take the pleasure out of observing. Baader Hyperion eyepieces are designed to get the absolute most from your telescope - whether you are observing planets, star clusters, nebulae or the Moon. Their versatility, premium build quality and suitability for photography make them an ideal investment for any amateur astronomer.
