Baader Planetarium Morpheus 12.5mm 76° eyepiece - 2″/1.25″
The name Morpheus - taken from the Greek god of dreams - is not just a poetic choice. Baader Planetarium chose it to express a clear ambition: to create an eyepiece that meets every need of a modern observer. And it is fair to say they succeeded. Since its introduction in 2015, the Morpheus has earned a permanent place in the bags of astrophotographers and visual observers around the world. Every detail of the Morpheus design reflects careful optical and mechanical engineering.
Wide and comfortable field of view
The 76° apparent field of view is a deliberate and well-considered compromise - in the best sense of the word. It is not as narrow as a dedicated planetary eyepiece, yet not so extremely wide that you need to move your head to reach the edge of the field. The result is a natural, comfortable view with no fish-eye effect and no sensation of looking into a glass sphere. The image is flat and free from noticeable distortion. Stars remain sharp and point-like almost to the very edge of the field - even on fast telescopes with low f-numbers, where many eyepieces fail to perform.
Optical design
The Baader Morpheus uses 8 lens elements arranged in 5 groups. The design incorporates exotic optical glass with a high refractive index and low dispersion. All internal surfaces and lens edges are carefully blackened to eliminate stray reflections and ghost images. The key feature is the proprietary Phantom Coating® multi-layer anti-reflection coating, which provides maximum light transmission and high contrast. This is especially noticeable when observing planets and fine nebula detail. The 20mm eye relief allows comfortable viewing even during long sessions at the telescope.
Build quality and practical features
The Morpheus is designed with everyday practical use in mind. Key features include:
- Compatible with both 1.25″ and 2″ focusers - both sizes include safety grooves that prevent the eyepiece from accidentally slipping out of the focuser
- Length of 108mm and weight of 345g - proportions carefully chosen to allow use in binoviewer setups, where a matched pair of Morpheus eyepieces provides balanced weight distribution
- Two adjustable eyecups - a fold-down rubber cup and a soft rubber cushion - for comfortable viewing both with and without eyeglasses
- Labels printed in fluorescent ink on the barrel, so you can identify the eyepiece in the dark without needing a flashlight
What can you observe with the Morpheus 12.5mm?
The Baader Morpheus 12.5mm is a versatile eyepiece for observers who do not want one set of eyepieces for planets and another for deep-sky objects. On planets it delivers excellent contrast and sharpness comparable to classic orthoscopic designs. On nebulae and star clusters it offers a pleasantly wide view without any compromise in image quality. It works well with refractors, Newtonian reflectors and catadioptric telescopes across a range of focal ratios.
If you are looking for one eyepiece you can rely on in any observing situation, the Morpheus 12.5mm is exactly that.
