Baader Planetarium Morpheus 4.5mm 76° eyepiece 2″-1.25″
The name Morpheus - taken from the Greek god of dreams - was not chosen by accident. With this name, Baader Planetarium promises an eyepiece that will satisfy every demanding observer, whether the telescope is pointed at planets, the Moon, or distant deep sky objects. And it truly delivers on that promise. The Morpheus 4.5mm is designed to combine the qualities of a top-class planetary eyepiece with the comfort of a wide field of view - and the result is impressive.
Wide field of view without compromise
The true field of view of 76° is a carefully considered balance. It is not as narrow as in traditional planetary eyepieces, so observing gives a real sense of space and immersion in the image. At the same time, it is not as extremely wide as in some competing designs, where you have to move your head to see the edge of the field. With the Morpheus, you simply place your eye and the entire image is in front of you at once - naturally, without effort. The image also does not suffer from the typical "aquarium effect" distortion that affects many wide-angle eyepieces.
Optical design and coatings
The Baader Morpheus premium eyepiece uses an optical system of 8 lenses in 5 groups. Exotic glass types are used to suppress chromatic aberration and to maximize light transmission. All optical surfaces are treated with multilayer phase anti-reflection coatings - Phantom Coating® - which provide exceptional light throughput and contrast. The internal surfaces and the edges of the lenses are thoroughly blackened to eliminate unwanted reflections and scattered light.
The result is an image with extreme sharpness in the center of the field, comparable to simple planetary eyepieces. Stars remain point-like and sharp all the way to the edge of the field - even with fast telescopes.
Mechanical design and practical features
The Morpheus is designed for use in both 1.25″ and 2″ focusers. Both barrel sizes are equipped with safety grooves to prevent the eyepiece from slipping or being pulled out accidentally - which is especially useful when working with binoviewer attachments or during extended observing sessions.
