Baader Planetarium Morpheus 6.5mm 76° eyepiece 2″/1.25″

The name Morpheus is no coincidence - it refers to the Greek god of dreams, and it reflects the ambition Baader Planetarium set for itself when developing this eyepiece: to create an eyepiece that fulfills every wish of a demanding observer. And it is fair to say they succeeded. The Morpheus series has quickly earned a solid place among the favorite tools of amateur astronomers worldwide, thanks to a well-thought-out balance between field of view, image quality, and viewing comfort.

Wide field of view and comfortable eye relief

The apparent field of view of 76° is a very practical choice. It is not as narrow as dedicated planetary eyepieces, so you get a pleasant sense of space when looking at the sky. At the same time, it is not as extreme as some 100°+ designs, where you need to move your head to see the full field. The result is a natural, immersive experience without compromise.

The eye relief of 18.5mm is very comfortable. Eyeglass wearers will appreciate that they can see the entire field of view without removing their glasses. The adjustable eyecup allows easy adaptation to individual needs.

Exceptional sharpness across the entire field

The Baader Morpheus 6.5mm eyepiece offers outstanding sharpness across the whole field of view. The center of the image is comparable to the best dedicated planetary eyepieces, and stars remain pinpoints all the way to the edge - even on fast telescopes with f/5 or lower focal ratios. The image does not suffer from the "fish bowl effect" or other distortions common in cheaper wide-angle designs.

Behind this performance is an optical system made of 8 elements in 5 groups, using exotic optical glass. All surfaces are coated with Baader Planetarium's multi-layer anti-reflection Phantom Coating® - a proprietary technology that ensures maximum light transmission and minimum scatter. The inner barrel surfaces and lens edges are fully blackened to eliminate unwanted reflections and improve image contrast.

Practical design for real-world use

The eyepiece body is designed with practicality in mind. Its size and weight of 350g make it suitable for use in binoviewer setups without balance concerns. The eyepiece has a filter thread, so attaching planetary, UHC, or OIII filters is straightforward. The barrel is available in both 1.25″ and 2″ sizes, and both versions have safety grooves for secure holding in the focuser - no unexpected drops or slipping.

A small but useful detail for night observing: the labels on the eyepiece body are printed in fluorescent paint, making it easy to identify the right eyepiece in the dark.

The Morpheus series is parfocal, which means that when switching between different eyepieces in the series, you do not need to significantly refocus - a big advantage when comparing magnifications or using multiple eyepieces in one session. A carrying case is included in the package.

Who is this eyepiece for?

The Baader Morpheus 6.5mm is an exceptionally versatile eyepiece that handles almost everything - from planetary and lunar surface detail and double stars to bright nebulae and star clusters. Its shorter focal length makes it an excellent choice for planetary observing with medium and large telescopes, while the 76° field of view adds useful context of the surrounding sky.

It works well with refractors, reflectors, and catadioptric telescopes of various focal ratios. If you are looking for one eyepiece that performs well in all situations and will be a reliable companion at the telescope for years to come, the Morpheus series is among the highest-rated choices on the market.
