TeleVue Panoptic 41mm 68° 2″ eyepiece
When experienced visual observers look for an eyepiece that offers maximum comfort during long observing sessions without sacrificing optical quality, the TeleVue Panoptic series is always among the first choices. The 41mm focal length model with a 68° apparent field of view is the largest member of this legendary series - and at the same time one of the most popular eyepieces for sweeping views of deep sky objects, open clusters and large nebulae.
Optical design and image quality
The eyepiece is built on a 6-element SWA (Super Wide Angle) optical system, carefully tuned by TeleVue to minimize coma, astigmatism and distortion across the entire field of view. Full multi-coating on all optical surfaces ensures excellent light transmission and high contrast - which is especially important when observing faint objects or detecting fine details in nebulae. The resulting image is sharp from the center to the very edge of the field, with no unwanted chromatic aberration.
Eye relief and comfort
The 27mm eye relief is one of the most comfortable in its class. This means that observers who wear glasses can view the entire field without having to remove them. The fold-down eyecup allows quick adjustment to individual needs - fold it down for maximum field of view without glasses, or leave it in the upright position when wearing glasses and let the eye relief do its job.
The weight of 953g reflects the robust build quality. When using this eyepiece in a 2″ focuser, it is recommended to have a sufficiently rigid focuser available, or to use a telescope with a sturdy mount.
Parfocal series and filter compatibility
The Panoptic series is designed as a parfocal set - all eyepieces in the series share the same focal point, so there is no need to refocus when switching between different focal lengths within the series. For observers who own multiple Panoptic eyepieces, this is a significant practical advantage.
The eyepiece features a standard 2″ filter thread, compatible with filters such as UHC, OIII or light pollution filters - particularly useful when observing emission nebulae from suburban locations. The optical elements are hermetically sealed and resistant to normal observing conditions.
Recommended telescope types
The TeleVue Panoptic 41mm is the ideal eyepiece for wide-field sweeping on telescopes with longer focal ratios - typically refractors or Newtonians at f/6 and above, where it delivers comfortable magnification and a true field of view exceeding 1°. On faster optics (f/4-f/5), some edge-of-field aberrations may appear that are harder to correct without a dedicated corrector, but the central area of the field remains excellent even there.
This eyepiece is a great choice for observing:
- The Milky Way
- Open star clusters
- Large nebulae such as the Orion Nebula and the Swan Nebula
- As a finder eyepiece for general sky orientation
A long-term investment in quality optics
This is an investment in optics that will last an entire observing career. TeleVue eyepieces are renowned for their longevity, mechanical durability and long-term optical stability. The Panoptic 41mm is simply an eyepiece that will bring you joy every time you look through it.
