Explore Scientific Blue filter #80A 2″

If you are serious about planetary observation, you know how important it is to choose the right filter. The Explore Scientific Blue #80A in the 2″ size is a classic blue filter that astronomers have been using for decades - and for good reason. It transmits blue and blue-green wavelengths while suppressing red and yellow components of the spectrum, significantly increasing the contrast of surface details on planets.

Optical design and build quality

The filter belongs to the L-RGB filter category. Its optical element features a multi-layer anti-reflection coating (multi-coating) that minimises unwanted reflections and ensures high transmission in the selected part of the spectrum. The threaded ring is precision-machined from aluminium - a material that is corrosion-resistant and lightweight, with the total filter weight being just 11 g. The filter screws directly into the barrel of a standard 2″ eyepiece without the need for any tools.

What can you observe with the #80A filter?

The #80A is a proven tool for observing a wide range of planets:

  • Jupiter - helps distinguish structures in cloud bands and enhances the Great Red Spot
  • Saturn - improves contrast between the rings and the planetary disk
  • Mars - enhances surface albedo features and polar caps
  • Venus - otherwise an almost featureless object, but when using a blue filter, subtle cloud formations in the ultraviolet part of the spectrum may become visible - the transmission band of the #80A approaches this range

The #80A is a truly universal tool for planetary visual astronomy.
