Omegon variable polarizing filter 2″

If you have ever pressed your eye to the eyepiece during a full moon and been forced to look away by the blinding glare, this filter was made exactly for moments like that. Unlike fixed-transmission filters, the Omegon 2″ variable polarizing filter allows you to smoothly and precisely control the amount of light passing through - directly during observation, without swapping filters or stepping away from the telescope.

How it works

The filter uses the principle of crossed polarization. It consists of two polarizing elements, and by rotating the outer ring you change the angle between their polarization planes. The result is smooth light transmission adjustment across a range from 40% down to just 1%. This gives you exceptional flexibility:

  • A slight reduction is enough when observing the moon at first quarter
  • Maximum attenuation becomes essential when viewing the full moon
  • Reduced light intensity also significantly suppresses unwanted reflections and halos within the optical system, directly improving contrast and visibility of surface details

The filter is equally useful when observing Venus, Jupiter, or Mars at opposition, where the bright planetary disk tends to overpower fine atmospheric details.

Neutral color rendering

One of the key properties of this filter is its neutral color characteristic - transmission is uniform across the visible spectrum, so the color of the observed object remains natural and undistorted. This is particularly appreciated by planetary observers who track the color bands of Jupiter or the reddish tint of Mars and do not want a filter interfering with that perception. Neutral color rendering also means the filter can be freely combined with other color or interference filters for specialized observations.

Construction and build quality

The filter body is made from anodized aluminum, ensuring corrosion resistance, mechanical strength, and low weight. The 2″ thread matches the standard used by the vast majority of eyepieces of this diameter, making attachment and removal quick and secure. The rotating ring for adjusting transmission operates smoothly and without play, so fine-tuning the attenuation is easy even while wearing gloves on a cold night in the field.

Eye protection and night vision

Regular use of this filter brings one more underrated benefit: it significantly reduces eye fatigue and prevents loss of dark adaptation. If you switch between observing the bright moon and deep-sky objects during a single evening, preserving your eyes' sensitivity to darkness is invaluable - and this is exactly where a variable filter delivers reliable, uncompromising performance.
