Omegon AC 80/400 AZ-3 astronomical telescope
Looking for your first real astronomical telescope that can handle both an evening under the stars and a trip out into nature? The Omegon AC 80/400 AZ-3 is exactly what you need. This achromatic refractor with an 80 mm objective and a 400 mm focal length has long been one of the most popular models in its category - and for good reason. It delivers solid light-gathering power, a comfortable field of view and easy handling, all at a reasonable price.
Optics and performance
The telescope operates at a focal ratio of f/5, making it a relatively fast instrument well suited for observing nebulae, star clusters and planets. The 80 mm objective aperture collects enough light for meaningful astronomical observation - you will see craters on the Moon, Saturn's rings, Jupiter's moons and a range of deep-sky objects. The shorter focal length of 400 mm also allows the use of wide-field eyepieces, so you can enjoy panoramic views of large star clusters or the Milky Way.
The optics are achromatic in design. Two glass elements work together to correct chromatic aberration to an acceptable level for this price class.
What can you observe?
- Craters and surface details on the Moon
- Saturn's rings
- Jupiter's moons
- Nebulae and open star clusters
- Panoramic views of the Milky Way
AZ-3 alt-azimuth mount
The AZ-3 alt-azimuth mount is designed so that virtually anyone can use it straight away. The telescope moves on two axes - altitude and azimuth - via smooth micrometric adjustment screws that allow precise and continuous tracking of objects. An azimuth lock is also available, preventing the telescope from drifting past your target even when using higher magnifications.
The tripod is made from sturdy aluminium alloy profiles and its height is fully adjustable, so you can easily find a comfortable observing position whether you are sitting or standing.
Versatility - astronomy and nature observation
One of the great strengths of this telescope is its versatility. It is primarily designed for astronomy, but with one simple accessory it is equally capable of daytime nature observation. A standard astronomical telescope produces an inverted image, which is not ideal when watching landscapes, birds or distant objects. Simply add an Amici prism diagonal to correct the image to its natural upright orientation and you have a powerful spotting scope ready to use. This flexibility is a decisive factor for many users.
