Sky-Watcher AC 120/600 AZ Pronto Astronomical Refractor Telescope
Overview
The Sky-Watcher AC 120/600 AZ Pronto is an achromatic refractor telescope featuring a 120mm objective lens and a 600mm focal length, operating at a focal ratio of f/5. This combination of parameters delivers an exceptionally wide field of view, making the telescope ideally suited for observing large-scale objects across the night sky. The instrument is supplied on the lightweight AZ Pronto alt-azimuth mount with a height-adjustable aluminium tripod, ensuring the entire setup is easy to transport and ready for use within minutes. The telescope appeals equally to beginners taking their first steps in astronomy and to experienced observers looking for a compact, practical instrument for use in the field.
Optics and Light-Gathering Performance
The Sky-Watcher 120/600 achromatic refractor uses a classic two-element optical design that delivers good light throughput and a high-contrast image. The 120mm aperture objective collects approximately 290 times more light than the naked eye, allowing objects as faint as approximately magnitude 12.5 to be observed. The optical resolution of the instrument reaches 1.17″, meaning the telescope is capable of resolving stars separated by more than 1.2″. The large aperture combined with the short focal length delivers outstanding performance especially when sweeping across wide areas of the sky.
What Can You Observe?
This telescope excels above all when observing:
- Open star clusters and star fields
- Emission and reflection nebulae
- Large sections of the Milky Way
- Comets with extended tails - where short focal lengths offer the greatest advantages
- Variable stars (visual observations)
- Bright deep-sky objects
- The Moon and basic planetary detail using short focal-length eyepieces
- Nature and wildlife during daylight hours (terrestrial observations)
Please note: for detailed planetary observation, we recommend Maksutov-Cassegrain telescopes or refractors with a longer focal length, as those designs are better optimised for high-magnification work.
AZ Pronto Alt-Azimuth Mount and Tripod
The telescope is supplied on the Sky-Watcher AZ Pronto alt-azimuth mount, constructed from aluminium and designed to carry telescopes weighing up to 3 kg. The mount features slow-motion controls on both axes - altitude and azimuth - via two flexible control handles, each of which can be positioned in two different positions per axis. This makes tracking moving objects smooth and comfortable. The mount can also be moved freely by hand around either axis for rapid pointing at any object. The tripod features legs made from duralumin profiles that are height-adjustable; each leg can be extended and locked in the desired position. An accessory tray is included as part of the tripod, making it convenient to keep eyepieces and accessories within easy reach during observing sessions.
Focuser, Accessories and Connectivity
The Sky-Watcher AC 120/600 AZ Pronto is equipped with a 2″ rack-and-pinion focuser that is compatible with Sky-Watcher motorised electric focusers. A 2″ to 1.25″ reduction adapter and a T2 camera adapter are included in the box, opening the door to first astrophotography experiments. The standard package also includes a Sky-Watcher 45° Amici (erecting) prism in the 1.25″ standard, which provides a correctly oriented image suitable for both terrestrial and astronomical use. Please note that to use 2″ eyepieces a separately purchased 2″ diagonal mirror is required - dielectric diagonal mirrors are recommended for the best possible image quality. Tube rings with a dovetail bar are included for mounting the tube on the mount.

Who Is This Telescope For?
The Sky-Watcher AC 120/600 AZ Pronto represents an excellent compromise between performance, portability and value. The 120mm aperture combined with a short focal length and a lightweight alt-azimuth mount makes it an ideal instrument for spontaneous observing sessions under the open sky. No lengthy collimation or polar alignment is required - the telescope is ready to use within minutes. It is equally well suited to observing from a home garden or balcony as it is to trips out to dark-sky locations. The included accessories cover the essential needs of a beginner observer, while the T2 camera adapter connection opens up possibilities for early astrophotography experiments.
