Binorum Bahtinov Focusing Mask 120-160 mm
Precise focus is everything in astrophotography. Even the smallest deviation shows up in every single frame. The Bahtinov focusing mask solves this problem simply and reliably. The plastic mask fits over the front of your telescope - covering apertures from 120 to 160 mm - and produces a characteristic diffraction pattern that lets you achieve focus with an accuracy impossible to reach by eye alone.
How to use the Bahtinov mask
The process is straightforward and anyone working with a camera on a telescope can do it.
- Place the mask over the front of your telescope.
- Point the telescope at a bright star.
- Switch on your camera and observe the star on the screen using live view.
- If the focus is off, the central spike of the Bahtinov grid appears shifted away from the other two spikes.
- Adjust the focuser until the central spike sits exactly between the other two. At that point, focus is optimal.
- Remove the mask and begin exposing your target object.
