Sky-Watcher 102/500 Star Discovery AZ WiFi telescope
The Sky-Watcher Star Discovery range was designed with one clear goal: to let anyone start exploring the night sky without unnecessary compromises or technical obstacles. This 102 mm achromatic refractor with a GO-TO SynScan AZ mount combines straightforward WiFi control with real practical value in the field - quick setup, compact dimensions, and battery power that keeps you completely free from mains electricity. This is not an instrument for those who enjoy complexity. It is a telescope that turns your first observing night into a genuine experience.
GO-TO SynScan mount with WiFi control
The Star Discovery AZ mount sits on an extendable steel tripod and houses a modern GO-TO SynScan system. Through the integrated WiFi module, the mount connects to an app on your smartphone. After a simple alignment, it automatically slews the telescope to any object you select - a planet, a nebula, or a star. The dual-axis encoder system allows you to move the telescope by hand without losing alignment: simply point manually, and the system remembers the position and continues tracking. An adjustable altitude clutch ensures smooth movement even when pointing near the zenith, where cheaper mounts tend to become stiff and imprecise.
Fully wireless and portable
The mount head includes a battery tray for eight AA batteries or rechargeable cells, so the entire system runs completely wire-free. This matters most when you head out of town to darker skies, where mains power simply is not available. The optical tube attaches and locks with just a few screws, the tripod folds flat, and one person can carry the whole assembly. Setting up or packing away takes under three minutes - easily done at dusk before the sky fully darkens.
102 mm achromatic refractor - wide field of view
The 102 mm achromatic refractor has a focal length of 500 mm and a focal ratio of f/4.9, which delivers a very wide field of view. This is a real advantage when observing extended objects such as open clusters, large nebulae, or bright comets with long tails. The telescope easily shows surface detail on the Moon, the polar caps of Mars, and the cloud bands of Jupiter. Under good conditions, it reaches a limiting magnitude of around 12.6. The Rayleigh resolution limit is 1.40″ and the Dawes limit is 1.14″, meaning the telescope can separate double stars with an angular separation greater than 1″.
Focuser, eyepieces, and T-2 thread for astrophotography
The telescope is fitted with a 2″ rack-and-pinion focuser with a 1.25″ reduction adapter, accepting standard eyepieces from the wider market. Two 1.25″ eyepieces are included in the set. The included 90-degree diagonal keeps images the right way up, which is useful not only for astronomical observing but also for terrestrial viewing where an inverted image would be inconvenient. The focuser also features a T-2 thread, so connecting an optional T-ring and a DSLR camera body is simple and direct.
First steps in astrophotography
The Sky-Watcher Star Discovery 102 is an ideal starting point for astrophotography, thanks to its motorised GO-TO mount with drives on both axes. The mount handles the combination of the f/5 achromatic refractor tube and a DSLR camera body without any difficulty. The mount is not limited to astronomy either - remove the optical tube, attach a DSLR with a lens, and you can shoot time-lapse sequences, video, or landscape photography with automatic tracking. The camera shutter can be controlled via a compatible cable (not included), and accessories attach using the dovetail L-adapter system, the same as on the Virtuoso mount.
What can you observe?
With this telescope you can see:
- The Moon - surface features down to approximately 1.5 km across
- The polar caps of Mars
- Cloud bands and other detail on Jupiter
- Numerous comets and brighter asteroids
- Approximately 1.85 million stars across the whole sky, down to around magnitude 12-12.5
- Double stars with an angular separation greater than 1″
- Hundreds of star clusters, nebulae, and galaxies - many showing hints of structure, though spiral arms remain beyond the resolution of this instrument
Power supply
Because of the portable nature of this set, no mains power adapter is included. The mount runs exclusively from the built-in battery tray, which takes eight AA batteries or rechargeable cells.
