TS Optics 2″/M42x1 Adapter (Rotation System)
This adapter from TS Optics connects M42x1 accessories to a 2″ telescope focuser. The M42x1 thread has a long history - it was used on classic SLR film cameras and many older lenses. This means the adapter also works with traditional photographic equipment. On the telescope side, it fits with a 2″ dovetail ring and includes an internal M42x0.75 thread for 2″ filters. The total length is just 14 mm, so reaching focus will not be a problem for most setups.
Part of the TS Optics Rotation System
This adapter is a core part of the TS Optics Rotation System - a much more refined approach than standard adapters offer. Every element in the system shares the same 2″ connector, which accepts 2″ filters directly in the optical path. The 360° rotation lets you turn your camera or eyepiece to any position at any time, without rebuilding the whole setup. The connection uses a tapered dovetail ring that self-centres automatically and prevents any tilt.
A flexible, modular system
The connectors on the left side of the system diagram face the telescope. Those on the right face the eyepiece or camera. You can combine and swap individual elements in either direction as needed. The system always keeps the integrated 2″ filter connection available, so filtration stays part of the chain regardless of the configuration you choose.
Practical uses in real astronomy
The TS Rotation System is useful in a wide range of real-world astronomy situations:
- As a compact solution for placing a 2″ filter between a telephoto lens or telescope and a camera body - for example when using Rubinar 300, 500, or MTO 1000 lenses.
- With modern field correctors that have a longer optical path (M48 or SC threads) - the system combines adaptation and rotation in a single step.
- For quick disconnection - swapping batteries or changing accessories takes only a few seconds, with no lengthy unscrewing.
Dust protection included
Leaving the adapter with a 2″ filter mounted in front of the camera body acts as effective dust protection for the sensor. You can also place the system behind the SC adapter of a telescope to protect the instrument internally - with the option to integrate a 2″ IR or UV filter at the same time. As the designers themselves note, the TS Rotation System grew out of practical astronomy work, and that shows in every detail of its construction.
